Student Leadership

Intent

At Pearl Hyde, we recognise that our children are the leaders of the future and therefore provide a range of opportunities for children to develop their leadership skills. Children’s voices are valued and promoted – each academic year, our children are given a platform to express the views of their school to help shape its development. At Pearl Hyde we recognise that student leadership is crucial to all careers, so as a school we are passionate about improving oracy skills and student leadership plays a role in this. We encourage all of our pupils to embrace the wide range of opportunities available to them – and always seek to find new ways that we can further empower our pupils. This enables our children to develop as individuals, as a community and grow the school as a whole. We also strive to mould leaders of the future, ready for work, ready for the world. We want to develop confident and articulate leaders who can share their views to any audience and apply their leadership skills to real-life situations.

The aim of the various teams within the Student Leadership Team is to enable children the chance to have leadership within the school, ensuring that their voices and opinions are heard. We are a pupil lead school, regularly receiving pupil voice to make improvements. Therefore, we are giving the children the opportunity to assist with those improvements along the journey.

Implementation

We have developed a range of leadership opportunities for our children. For some leadership positions, children are elected by their peers through a democratic process, instilling our British value, democracy. Others require children to apply for the position, often requiring a written application, giving a presentation and going through a selection process.

Impact

Student leadership at Pearl Hyde enables our children to become more independent and confident in themselves, increasing self-awareness in activities in their learning and outside the classroom. Children will become more responsible for themselves, their learning and for their behaviours and in doing so creating role models for others and instilling ‘The Pearl Hyde Way’, which in turn will increase their engagement in learning in the classroom as well in school life. They will learn how to work together, become leaders and develop their personal skills, learning to work collaboratively with staff and other children that are characterised by mutual trust and respect. Children will develop their social skills which will enable them to communicate their point of view, lead a verity of tasks, speak to an audience and create greater interpersonal skills and in turn this will develop oracy across the school. Overall, this will create great participation, empowering them to participate in their own learning and feel a sense of enjoyment in the classroom and around school as a result of their voices being heard.
